Problem with my samsung 56 inch. When I turn on the tv I have sound but the screen displays a black and white checkerboard pattern. I have turned the off the set 3 to 4 times ( which I know is not good for it) and the tv then displays the picture. I have noticed before this problem started that there was a very thin red line appearing through the center of the picture I was watching. I have searched threads and wasn't able to find symptoms like mine but think they are all relevant to the same problem. I have owned the set for 4 yrs and have replaced 2 bulbs. Seems every 2 yrs. bulb dies. Most likely common, I am satisfied with that. This other problem has me troubled.
Appreciate any input. Model- hlr 5656 wx Thanks, Bob

Does this problem happen with all the inputs?
Does the check board pattern appear over the menu?

1. In Standby mode, press Mute + 1 + 8 + 2 + Power to enter service mode.

2. Select the DDP1011, then TEST PATTERN, then press the right arrow key on remote to scan through some test patterns.

3. Repeat the same steps with the DNIe option.

If the problem appears with the DNIe then is the digital board, if the problem just appear when testing the DDP1011 then it's the DMD board.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I tried what you suggested has a test. No checker board pattern on either test while going through the process. The question I have is when I performed the test 2 different days the TV powered up after each test, Picture was fine. On other instances when turning on the set I will get the checker board display and will have to reboot 3 to 4 times to get the picture. I have read all the threads on this forum trying to find symntoms like mine or close to it. I don't want to start replacing all the parts. It looks like there are 4 components ( colorwheel, ballast, digital board and dmd board) which parts do I replace to get this dialed in to good working order? Thanks, Bob

Okay, I had problem checked and found it to be the power supply board. The caps were overheated ( swelled up) creating my problem with powering up. Thanks, Bob

Okay, today 9-12-09 received my power supply board from DM and installed it. Did not see any swollen caps on the old board as I was informed there would be. So, installed the board and powered up the unit. Turned on with picture and audio. Picture was once again perfect. I am a very satisfied customer with( answers.com) cost $40 for a tech to troubleshoot through email. Not bad. Although, I was reluctant at first to order the part. I am glad I did, part cost under $100 shipped. So over all $140 instead of maybe 5 or 6 hundred. PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bob
